The following concert version of the Ariadne on Naxos is at the center of the Summer Night Concert. Despite its sparse instrumentation, the ensemble in the square proves to be a well-functioning opera orchestra as well. It is astonishing how, under the baton of Matthias Fletzberger, it suddenly plays with such great sonic power towards the end of the opera, as if it were trying to rival Wagner's Twilight of the Gods, which, however, is entirely faithful to the score.
